How a Dog Seat Belt Can Save Your Dogs Life

A Dog Seat Belt Is Not A Mere Accessory!

The THREE critical safety benefits for your dog in a moving car are met simply and inexpensively with a dog seat belt.

So why do 98% of dog owners ignore the safety of their dog? Is it as simple as spelling it out? We hope so because currently unrestrained dogs in cars cause over 30,000 car accidents in the U.S.

1. Window Safety

Never Allow Your Dog To Put His Head Out of a Moving Vehicle

You must never let your dog hang it’s head out of a moving vehicle. Your dog could be exposed to exhaust pollution, airborne road debris and other flying objects and worse, your dog could be clipped by a passing vehicle. Your dog should not be able to jump from an open window because he’s scared, curious or just because it’s open. Neither will your dog be at risk of falling out of the window or injuring their neck if you need to suddenly brake.

2. Driver Distraction

There is less chance of the driver being distracted if your dog is secured and unable to move around the vehicle. Knowing that your dog is safely where you secured him allows you to concentrate on the driving not the passenger!

3. Accident Protection

Should you or another driver suddenly needs to brake or there is an accident involving the car, there is less chance of your dog becoming an airborne projectile. That means there is less chance your dog and the other occupants in the car can be seriously injured by a flying dog!

Common Sense

It makes sense that you would secure yourself, your children and other passengers so why not secure your dog?

You will need to train your dog to sit still when travelling in the car, regardless of the distance.

Your dog will need to acclimatise to travelling in a moving vehicle. It’s not a natural state for a dog. A dog’s reaction can run the entire gamut from excitement to car sickness to fear so you must prepare your dog for travel with good training.

You are increasing the risk of accidents by having an excited or agitated dog in the car when you are travelling. Your dog should be trained to be calm as a driver has enough distractions outside the vehicle to concentrate on.

What Type of Dog Seat Belt?

There are a number of different options available and each has its merits.

You will need to consider the following THREE factors to work out which dog seat belt will best suit your needs.

  1. You. Specifically how you are able to manage the process of safely getting your dog in and out of the car.
  2. Your dog’s shape and size. Clearly, moving and securing a large dog will require stronger restraints than a small puppy.
  3. The type of vehicle or car you drive.

There is unfortunately a lack of formal car and pet safety testing requirements that manufacturers must adhere to when it comes to crashes. Therefore you need to be aware that not every car seat belt performs as it should in terms of certifying that your dog will be survive a crash. Crash testing and safety rating the materials is not the same as rating how safe the seat belt will make your dog.
